Looking for a new job is a scary proposition

It’s taken a lot of courage to write this and even as I pound the keys on my computer, I realize that what I’m doing is scary, and terrifying and incredibly stimulating.

My journalism contract is government-funded and this year, it’s not entirely clear if the funding will recur, and therefore, I’m in a position where I’m looking for another job.

My training and coaching business is still going strong and I remain focused on that and growing that aspect of my personal economy.

That being said, life is getting expensive and I’m on the lookout for an opportunity that will leverage my considerable communications and writing skills alongside the feeling of belonging to something bigger than myself.

As a football coach – and that’s been something I’ve done for many years – I’ve come to realize that my passions for being part of a team are almost non-negotiable. I need to feel like I’m working toward something alongside teammates who are equally engaged as I am.

Those challenges are never-ending and so, with a few guaranteed months left on my contract, I’m out here looking for work again. The last time this happened, in 2020, when the pandemic shut down all the group classes I had been teaching at the DDO Seniors Centre and the West Island Women’s Centre in a matter of seconds.

The gyms all closed, and with that, so did the chapter of my life in which fitness training was actually paying the bills.

Now, dear readers, I’m sharing my anxiety with you. I am having trouble sleeping, trouble maintaining a good nutritional schedule and trying like hell to negotiate every day with the least amount of stress possible.

Twice in the last week, I have driven in completely the opposite direction of my intended arrival because I was so lost in my own thoughts about how, why and when I was going to pay my bills and generate revenue.

I can’t continue like this.

My experience is all over the place. I have spent roughly 20 years in the newspaper business, with another 10 or 12 years of client service, customer service management and all the skills that go with being an entrepreneur.

I have experience in sales management, content management, media relations, public-relations and other copywriting and seven years as the director of publicity and marketing for a local non-profit organization.

I’m still taking clients at Monster Gym, which is the bodybuilding capital of eastern Canada and I can’t say enough about what a vibrant fitness atmosphere it provides. Do you have issues with movement or wish to get back into an exercise program but don’t know where to start?

I can help.

That’s the best thing about me – I can and want to help. You have to put yourself out there when you are looking around so that’s what I’m doing. I hope the universe can help!
