Make the most of your summer by planning your workouts ahead of time

My year without sugar is progressing nicely

With just a few weeks left until the carefree first few days of summer are upon us, it’s important that some of our habits remain the same even if the weather is more pleasant and the possibility of increased social occasions beckon.

For those of you who have been working out regularly to this poiunt, it means you have set aside time in your schedule and your life in order to look after yourself in a way that wil have meaningful, long-term benefits to our body.

I don’t need to remind you that weight training can delay the onset of cognitive decline and mobility challenges as we get older.

I’m sure I don’t need to remind you that weight training increases bone density so to help us better avoid fractures if we should fall, and it would be beyond me to remind you that your mood and libido will improve, your stress and anxiety will be decreased and you will likely enjoy a greater quality of life as you age.

No, I don’t think I need to do that.

What I will say, in this space, is that the routine you have established for regular exercise intervals has proved beneficial and that you need to maintain consistency for those changes you have made to stick permanently.

So, it’s worth it now to plan how and when you will work out now that the routine has changed – if you have kids, if your work schedule changes or if you have vacation time planned, these are all things that might change your daily routine.

Write down how and when you plan to continue your workout schedule because it’s simply too easy to just walk away and give up on the changes you have made and will continue to make. One of my training clients in her 50s told me last week she wasn’t noticing any changes, except that she ‘wasn’t in pain anymore.’

That’s a pretty big, and pretty good change!

That can be you, too. Get the calendar, map out your vacation time and leisure time and find a way to schedule time to work out in there as well. Looking after yourself if the best way to look after the other people in your life – and if you have a family, it’s doubly important.

Show yourself how you plan to attack the summer with a new routine, and I promise that by living up to your responsibility to yourself, your body will reward you in ways you can’t even imagine. Increased energy, a better mindset and mood and better performance in every part of your life.

That’s worth it – because movement is medicine.
